Spasticity

Spasticity is described as a tightness or stiffness in the muscles. The tightness can be so severe that the extremities are completely immobile. The muscles have increased tone which can make it difficult to move the joints in full range of motion. The reflexes are increased in comparison to normal. The causes include multiple sclerosis, head injury, stroke, spinal cord injury and many other neurodegenerative diseases. Treatment for spasticity includes botox injections. Botulinum toxin or (botox) causes muscle relaxation when combined with physical therapy that can greatly improve the range of motion of a joint. It can also help with the pain surrounding the joint caused by severe stiffness. The injections are performed in the muscle groups which are spastic every 3 months. Dr. Desai has special training for these EMG guided botox injections in patients who suffer from spasticity.
